The Pope approves the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the jubilee of Christianity in Cebu

Pope Francis accepted the request of Archbishop Jose Palma of Cebu to proclaim a special Jubilee Year within the archdiocese, together with the attached plenary indulgence, in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the country.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the archdiocese of Cebu reported that the Holy Father, through a decree, approved the archbishop’s request earlier last month.

Indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian earns under certain conditions prescribed for the action of the Church.

The plenary indulgence is also granted to the faithful under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer according to the intentions of the Pope) to Christians who, with a spirit detached from all sin, participate in the celebrations of the Jubilee Year and / or who devoutly do a visit, in the form of a pilgrimage, to the 12 declared pilgrim churches.

The archdiocese of Cebu has announced that it will solemnly begin the celebrations through a liturgical rite, which involves the opening of the Holy Door of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cebu.

Similar celebrations will be repeated in eight other churches in the oldest and most distant parishes of the archdiocese: the parish of Saints Peter and Paul, Bantayan, Bantayan Island; Parish of St. Nicholas, Cebu City; Parish of Santa Caterina de Alessandria, City of Carcar; Parish of Patrocinio de Maria, Boljoon; Parish of Sant’Anna, Barili; National Shrine of the Parish of St. Joseph, Mandaue City; Parish of San Guillermo de Aquitania, Dalaguete; and the Parish of San Michele Arcangelo, Argao.

A series of jubilee celebrations will also be organized at the archdiocesan and parish level, which will involve the socially and spiritually marginalized and the peripheries of society, in the context of the call to the new evangelization.
