OUR On a sunny day, the city isn’t short of cold shaved ice treats, ranging from Japanese kakigori to bingsu, plus our very local ais kacang. There is a great restaurant on the SS2 which is worth visiting if you want to satiate your sweet cravings. The major dessert spot called Aftermeal is known for its creative fusion of kakigori desserts. If you like crushed ice desserts, this is the place to go.
Aftermeal owner, Ong Pei Chin (aka Pei) said, “I started my research and development with tea-based shaving ice. After trying more than ten different types of tea, my team and I finally settled on a premium type of oolong tea called Iron Lady Tea (Tie-Guan-Yin). After more than 100 trial and error, the Kakigori Iron Lady Milk Tea we offer today has evolved into our top seller. He garnered such a positive reaction that all of our friends and family supported him and urged us to build our own. [physical] shop.”
Pei, who has a background in engineering and information technology, said he doesn’t have a mechanism to ensure good service or consistent food quality. It took him quite a while to familiarize himself with the food and drink industry. For example, Pei, a big fan of tea, did not know that tea was a product strongly influenced by the seasons.
“Food commodities don’t follow our common sense logic, unlike engineering and IT. As a result, the quality of our desserts has changed dramatically. There are times when our customers leave the store happy, and there are other situations where it is so bad that we literally have customers recommending our colleagues. “According to Pei, they have since begun regular thorough quality checks on their desserts. Aftermeal employees continually seek consumer feedback to ensure everything is in order.
When asked what sets Aftermeal apart from other desserts, he replied that they only provide crushed ice, cake, and drinks. “We do not intend to provide first courses and therefore we will devote all our time and work only to the creation of desserts. Not just any desserts, but desserts that make people happy. “Hence their slogan:“ Happiness, you deserve it ”. During the pandemic, the after-meal struggled. Pei pointed out that crushed ice and cakes don’t travel well via delivery services.
“We had a lot of problems during the pandemic. Every month we were literally losing money and, at some point, we even thought about giving up completely. [But] we insisted, and the rest, as they say, is history. I’m very glad we didn’t give up and were able to continue the business, and Aftermeal is currently doing pretty well. “There are three main dessert specialties at Aftermeal. One is a quality combination of Iron Lady Tea. and milk called Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori. The toppings include brown sugar pearls, almond flakes, jelly and red kidney beans.
Next up is the bright green Royal Matcha Kakigori, which comes with brown sugar jelly pearls and matcha ice cream underneath, and is generously dusted with matcha powder. Additional toppings include bowls of chewy pearls, sweet potatoes, and taro balls coated in brown sugar sauce. You can eat it with your crushed ice or on its own. It all depends on you. The next popular dessert on their menu is called Royal Calamansi Yokan Kakigori. It is served with longan, gummy white pearls and crackling pearls made from passion fruit and calamansi. If you like sweet and sour meals, you should try this crushed ice treat.
Despite their top three bestsellers and signature items, we’ve discovered something we think all chocolate lovers should try. Their Dark Milo Kakigori is to die for. The chocolate ice cream is accompanied by Milo’s nuggets hidden inside the crushed ice. A malted chocolate sauce is laid on the side of this chocolate delight dish. This is truly a fantastic surprise for Milo fans. Aftermeal Desserts also offers delicious burnt cheesecakes in three different flavors. Classic burnt cheesecake, Matcha cheesecake and Iron Lady burnt cheesecake. All three pies are flavorful, rich and creamy to the extreme.
We tried calamansi winter melon, super iron lady milk tea and wild honey milk tea from their drinks menu. Their classic winter melon tea has a strong flavor and isn’t overly sweet, and of course the clear pearl added a nice surprise. But wild honey milk tea is without a doubt my favorite. The combination of milk and honey combines so well that it’s no surprise that people keep coming back for more.
Aftermeal Desserts is a great place to go after dinner. The options might sound simple, but Aftermeal has contributed their own twist to their menu, so you have to taste it to understand it. It is hands down one of the best desserts to visit if you crave crushed ice. Pei stressed his intention to develop enough stores to cover key areas in Malaysia so that Aftermeal can bring happiness to as many people as possible.
