John Fetterman, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania and Democratic Senate Candidate, demonstrated strength and confidence during an appearance on Zoom this week hosted by Democratic director and political advocate William Ray. Fetterman said of his opponent Dr. Oz, “He doesn’t live in Pennsylvania, he doesn’t know Pennsylvania, and he doesn’t care about Pennsylvania.” Fetterman said he and Oz are opposed to issues that matter to Pennsylvanians such as women’s right to reproductive freedom, a higher minimum wage, and environmental justice. Currently, Fetterman has an 11-point lead in polls over Dr. Ounce

Lieutenant Governor Fetterman and his wife Gisele Barreto are reaching all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and have met as many Republican voters as Democrats. In an interview with William Ray, Fetterman said he was experiencing no negative reactions in the red counties and was finding more support than he expected. His social media trolling of Dr. Oz about being an outsider in Pennsylvania seems to be working. It got New Jersey-based celebrities such as Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of Jersey Shore fame and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt to invite Oz to come back to his “home”, the state of New Jersey. Fetterman’s campaign style breaks with the traditional and “extraordinary” style of the Democrats, yet he is working in the Pennsylvania Senate race. Dr. Oz’s alignment with Trump may have earned him the Republican nomination in the Senate, but that doesn’t appear to be a winning strategy in the purple state.
Trump fell in love with Dr. Oz when the famous doctor touted hydroxychloroquine, the drug Trump falsely claimed to be an effective treatment for COVID. Dr. Oz has impressive Ivy League credentials, but his TV show did not reflect this fact. “A 2014 study of 40 randomly selected episodes from 2013 found that only 46% of his recommendations were supported by evidence and 1 in 7 were actually contradicted by scientific data” (Think, NBC May 19, 2022). Oz is the medical version of Trump’s snake oil salesman who will commit anything to anyone gullible enough to believe what he says.

In addition to being a money-hungry, self-centered attention seeker, Dr. Oz has advocated the overturning of Roe v Wade and calls himself “100% pro-life”. He is also a climate change denier and mistakenly refers to carbon emissions as “not a problem”. Worse still, he’s “all in on” Trump’s “big lie”, the anti-democracy political idea that Republicans are exclusively racing ahead of the midterm elections. Dr. Oz is a conspiracy theorist who, like all MAGA loyalists, dismisses the facts.

Fetterman says his “top three priorities in Washington if elected will be to raise the minimum wage, codify Roe V. Wade, and protect voting rights. It is clear that his goals are in line with human rights, personal freedoms and values that have always defined who America is as a country. In his interview with Ray, Fetterman said that by spending as much time in the red counties as in the blue, he realized how his support is becoming beyond the lines of party. His wife Gisele said many Republicans have approached them declaring support for his candidacy on Dr. Oz. Some proudly wore buttons to demonstrate their commitment to vote for him in November. In the recent primary, Fetterman won on all his opponents in all 67 counties.

Democrats need a seat in the Pennsylvania Senate to maintain their majority status. Fetterman leads the polls, but vows to keep the intensity of his campaign high to show Pennsylvania citizens that he is qualified to be their senator and to point out why Dr. Oz is a bad choice for the state. Like Trump, Dr. Oz is an opportunist who uses his celebrity status to pursue a political career for which he is not qualified. Additionally, despite his educational pedigree and medical accomplishments as a heart surgeon, many of his ideas about health and medicine have garnered criticism or been discredited.

Like Donald Trump, you can’t trust anything Dr. says Oz. Sensationalism and lying is the strategy they use to capture the attention and adoration of potential supporters. These fake politicians are manipulative masters who spread misinformation in their pursuit of power and money. Pennsylvania people are getting closer to Oz and realize that John Fetterman’s honest, down-to-earth approach to politics is what Pennsylvania needs and deserves.

In May 2022, the Guardian reported that Columbia University had quietly removed Oz’s presence from their website in reaction to his attempt to represent Pennsylvania in the United States Senate.

“For more than seven years, the private university of New York has resisted calls to cut ties with Oz, which has used its TV platform to promote drugs ranging from ineffective diet pills to discredited Covid treatments.” Like shy Trump, Oz is a grandiose and ambiguous character who appeals to gullible and ignorant Americans who are vulnerable to cult figures who lie and make outlandish promises they never intend to keep. For Oz, like Trump, politics is about ego and power. John Fetterman is in charge of helping people and knows how to do it for the Pennsylvanians.
