SuperWest Sports Preseason All America Team

  By Stephen Vilardo, SuperWest Sports

Llast week we brought you our SuperWest Sports Preseason All-Pac-12 teams as voted by our senior writers.

We are now pleased to introduce our inaugural preseason All-American team.

I have selected 12 players in both the offensive and the defensive units. In attack, I went with 12 for three wide receivers and two running backs, and in defense I picked four linemen and four linebackers.

There have been numerous tough choices to make, particularly in the QB and RB selections, with great depth nationwide in those positions this season.

The simplest of the selections was in the pass capture positions. Despite the excellent depth, the duo of Jordan Addison and Jaxson Smith-Njigba at WR and Brock Bowers at TE are a step above the rest.

I only went with the first team selections, but I also listed some west coast players that were considered.

As a bonus, I’ve also included my prediction of the Heisman Trophy winner.

Bryce Young | Vasha Hunt / Associated Press

Offensive Player of the Year: Bryce Young, quarterback, Alabama

The reigning Pasadena Heisman Trophy winner a season ago threw for 4,872 yards completing 66.9% of his passes.

He will once again have at his disposal the full complement of Crimson Tide offensive weapons.

Will Anderson | Athletics of Alabama

Defender of the Year: Will Anderson, linebacker, Alabama

Anderson won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy last season and is expected to repeat this fall. He led the nation last season with 2.23 tackles per game loss, over half a TFL per game more than the next closest.

In my opinion, he should have left with the Heisman Trophy last season too, or at least be in the top three of the vote.

Heisman Trophy: Jaxson Smith-Njigba, wide receivers, State of Ohio

As previously mentioned, Anderson would have had my vote last season if I had had a vote, I would say he should win it this season, but he won’t.

Discounting Anderson who would leave Young, our offensive POY to win it, but he won it last year and it won’t be repeated.

So my bold prediction of the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner is Jaxson Smith-Njigba of Ohio State.

The Rose Bowl was his coming out party as a primary weapon in the Buckeyes offense and the numbers he should amass will earn him Heisman (although his QB CJ Stroud may steal the thunder).
